John T. Parker, MD, a Proliance surgeon practicing in Edmonds, is now offering an innovative new therapy for patients with obstructive sleep apnea. The Inspire system is a fully implantable nerve stimulator, which works to keep the airway from collapsing during sleep.
The Inspire system is indicated for treatment of patients with moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea who are intolerant of CPAP therapy. The system is placed in an outpatient procedure with patients returning to normal activity within 1 – 2 weeks.
The device works by delivering minute electrical impulses to selected nerves innervating the tongue musculature to open the airway during inspiration. The patient receives a remote control to activate the device during sleep and switch it into the inactive mode during wakeful hours. Studies have shown the treatment to be highly effective in preventing airway obstruction and to be well tolerated by users. The system was originally approved by the FDA in 2014. Over 1600 patients throughout the United States have received Inspire implants.
Inspire therapy is a breakthrough obstructive sleep apnea treatment option now offered at IMS. While you’re sleeping, Inspire monitors every breath you take. Based on your unique breathing patters, the system delivers mild stimulation to key airway muscles, allowing the airway to remain open during sleep.
