Otosclerosis Can Cause Hearing Loss, but Our Team Can Help You Reconnect With Sounds

There are a variety of causes for hearing loss, including otosclerosis. This condition refers to abnormal growth of bone that obstructs the ability of sound to move through the ear.

More than 3 million people in the U.S have been affected by otosclerosis. If you’ve been diagnosed with this condition, you’re not alone, and our team at Puget Sound Ear Nose and Throat can provide treatment to allow you to experience the sounds in your world again.

What Are the Symptoms of Otosclerosis?

If you’re experiencing hearing loss that has gotten worse, difficulty understanding low-pitched sounds, tinnitus and difficulty balancing, you may have otosclerosis.

How Does Otosclerosis Cause Hearing Loss?

  • Bones in the ear vibrate when sounds enter.
  • The bones transmit the sound waves to the inner ear, which in turn converts them into signals that are sent to the brain.
  • Otosclerosis causes these bones to fuse with neighboring bones.
  • Over time, otosclerosis stops the bones from vibrating as sound enters. This can prevent sounds from reaching the inner ear.

How Does an ENT Treat Otosclerosis?

If a doctor has determined your symptoms are caused by otosclerosis, the next steps will depend on the severity of your condition. If your symptoms are mild, hearing aids may be a helpful option. Our team will work collaboratively with you to determine what type of hearing aids will best serve your needs.

In more serious cases, your provider may recommend a stapedectomy, a surgical procedure that involves replacing part of the bone within the ear with an implant that transports sound. Typically, patients who undergo this procedure can return home later the same day or the following day. If this is the best option for you, our otolaryngologist will explain the procedure beforehand and respond to any questions or concerns you might have.
