Puget Sound ENT Announces the Opening of its New Allergy Clinic in Edmonds, WA
Accurate testing is the first step to effectively identifying and managing allergies, ultimately eliminating them and their unwanted symptoms all together.
More than 50 million Americans experience various types of allergies each year, according to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America. Puget Sound ENT allergy specialists conduct precise allergy measurements that pinpoint the irritant(s) and help you plot out a treatment plan that fits your schedule and lifestyle.
We perform allergy testing within our office using skin testing, which is considered the most reliable technique. Puget Sound ENT uses Modified Quantitative Testing (MQT), which is a combination of both skin prick testing and intradermal testing. We generally prefer this form of skin testing over blood work testing as it is more sensitive, accurate and affordable.
Here are a few commonly asked questions about Puget Sound ENT’s MQT allergy testing:
How do I know when to be seen for allergy testing?
Allergy specialists can play an important role in the care and treatment of a variety of allergy symptoms. Some allergy problems can be controlled with the occasional use of an over-the-counter medication. However, when allergies begin to interfere with your day-to-day activities or affect your quality of life, it’s important to connect with a specialist to find a solution. If you are concerned about your allergy symptoms, we always encourage patients to call the clinic to speak with our knowledgeable staff and to schedule an appointment for evaluation.
What sets MQT allergy testing apart?
MQT is currently the most advanced and defined way to test patients for allergies. The test helps to determine allergen sensitivities and relieves patients of seasonal and year-round discomfort, such as from hay fever, allergic asthma, dermatitis, food allergies, penicillin allergy, bee venom allergy and latex allergy.
How is MQT performed?
After an initial consultation, patients will participate in two sessions of simple, in-office testing. Before testing, we’ll advise you to refrain from taking certain medications for a certain number of days leading up to the test. During MQT, a prick test is completed, followed by a series of small injections, using very fine needles, in rows on your arms. Each reaction is measured and recorded carefully. The results are then used to produce the allergen serums required for allergy shots, helping patients to build an immunity to sensitivities and alleviate allergy symptoms.
What are the side-effects of MQT?
Slightly swollen, red, itchy bumps (known as wheals) are often a side effect of MQT, much like a TB skin test. These wheals may be most noticeable during the test. An area of swelling, redness and itching may occur a few hours after the test and can last for as long as a couple of days.
Completed in the comfort of our office in Edmonds, MQT skin testing is rapid, reliable and more affordable than blood tests. The specialists at Puget Sound ENT are highly skilled and experienced in allergy testing and treatments, helping you feel better fast.
